Scotland is known worldwide for it’s superb golf courses and the north-east has an abundance of inland and coastal courses on which to test your skills. Courses in and around Aberdeen include, Hazelhead, Royal Aberdeen, Craibstone, Murcar, Newmachar and Kemnay to name but a few.

GolfA short drive up Royal Deeside will offer courses set amidst stunning scenery, such as Deeside, Banchory, Inchmarlo, Aboyne, Ballater, and Braemar.

If you would prefer just to practice your swing and improve your technique, there is a municipal Driving Range at the beach. The Aspire Golf Centre, opened in September 2004 and located approximately 5 miles from the city, on the south bank of the River Dee, offers excellent facilities, and has a driving range, golf shop, and coffee shop.

Castles

Craigievar CastleThere are many spectacular castles and gardens in very close proximity to Aberdeen, such as Drum Castle, Crathes Castle, Craigievar Castle, Castle Fraser and Fyvie Castle. The most famous of all is Balmoral Castle where the Royal family are in residence for part of the year.

These castles and National Trust properties are rich in history and legend, with many reputed to be haunted. Many offer excellent visitor centres, guided ranger walks and other outdoor activities and are well worth a visit.

Whisky

Whisky DistilleryThe A96 north route from the city will lead you into The Whisky Trail. Along the way you will see countless distilleries nestling in the hillsides and picturesque villages, most of which offer tours, where you can experience the malt whisky making process at first hand. Sample a wee dram at the end of your tour and perhaps purchase a bottle of your favourite malt to remind you of the hills and glens.

Fishing

FishingSome of the finest fishing is to be found in the clear sparkling waters of the River Dee, whose source originates high in the Cairngorm Mountains and exits into the North Sea, some 80 miles downstream in Aberdeen. The Dee is home to Scotland’s greatest spring run of Alantic salmon and anglers fish the Dee in the summer for Salmon, grilse and sea trout.
